Lanzarote is the northernmost and easternmost of the large islands of the Canary archipelago. The area is 845.94 sq. km. The island's capital is Arrecife. Lanzarote is known as "the island of fire-breathing mountains". The name of the island Lanzarote comes from the Genoese merchant Lancelotto Malocello, who visited the island in the XIV century.
Lanzarote is separated from the northern tip of Fuerteventura by a six-mile strait. The island is a volcanic origin. Much a part of the island is covered with molten lava with rising between the lava fields colorful volcanic cones of different sizes.
The island stretches from south-west to north-east. The coastline is smooth, without enclosed coves to shelter yachts from bad weather. All marinas, ports and anchorages are on the south-eastern and southern coasts of the island. The island's main marinas and fishports with comfortable and safe berths are: Arrecife, Marina Rubicon, Playa Blanca, Puerto Calero, Puerto Carmen.
In the marinas of Arrecife, Marina Rubicon there are bases of charter companies offering bareboat and crewed yachts for rent.
