The town of Trapani is located in the north-west of Sicily, about 32 km north of Marsala and the same distance south-west of San Vito Lo Capo . Together with the Egadi Islands a few miles to the west, Trapani is a popular starting and finishing point for trips on charter yachts in the western part of Sicily and the Egadi Archipelago. The city's name comes from the Greek word for "sickle", due to the curved shape of its harbor.

The closest international airport to Trapani is 80 km away in Palermo. Trapani also has a local airport connecting it to other cities in Italy, including Rome. Trapani is connected by ferry service to Sardinia, the Egadi and Pelagian Islands.
