The Tremiti Islands, also known as the Diomedes Islands, are a small archipelago in the Adriatic Sea, north of the Gargano Peninsula, 23 miles east- north-east of Termoli and 21 miles north-west of Rodi Garganico. They form a commune of the Italian province of Foggia, Puglia, and are part of the Gargano National Park. The archipelago consists of 5 islands: San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio and Pianosa.
The islands were used to intern political prisoners during the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini. It was also the prison of Julia the Younger, the granddaughter of Augustus.
The islands are now an important tourist attraction because of the clear waters surrounding them. Up to 100,000 visitors come to the islands during the summer season. Ferry connections to the mainland are available from Termoli, Vieste, Rodi-Garganico and Capoile, while Alidaunia offers flights from the San Domino heliport to Foggia and Vieste.
The islands have two piers where yachts can be moored, several anchorages and mooring buoys.
