The mountainous island of Capraia is located at 19 miles to the east of Cape Corse on Corsica and 22 miles north-west of Elba Island. The name of the island comes from the Latin capra, meaning goat. The island of Capraia belongs to the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago. Usually yachtsmen who travel by charter yachts, rented in Genoa, Scarlino, Punta Ala, include this island in their sailing itineraries.
Until 1986 the island was a penal colony and only in recent years the tourism industry has started working here. The only one place jn the island where yachts can be moored at the pier. It is Porto Capraia in the north-east of the island.
The marina is small and invariably crowded in summer. There are buoys next to the marina, which a yacht can be moored, but they are located in the open part of the bay, which open for the north and north-east winds. Yacht skippers should be careful and to check the weather forecast before sailing to Capraia. In addition, there are several anchorages off the coast of the island.
