Stromboli Island

Stromboli Island, the easternmost of the Lipari (Aeolian) islands in Italy, is also the most famous island in the archipelago because of its permanently active volcano, whose lava flow can be seen at night more than 30 miles away. For this reason, yachtsmen often call Stromboli the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean.” Unlike Italy's two other volcanoes classified as “active” - Etna and Vesuvius - Stromboli never sleeps. It erupts four times an hour. The sea around the island is often covered with a thin layer of pumice. The volcano is a popular tourist attraction. There are hiking excursions to it.

The coastline of the island is smooth. There are no natural bays and marinas. Yachts can be anchored on the leeward shore.
