The two small resort towns and the two marinas of Chiavari and Lavagna are located five miles south-east of Rapallo on opposite shores of the Entella River. The Genoa-Rome railroad passes through them.
Although less popular than the neighboring towns of Portofino and Rapallo, Chiavari and Lavagna has interesting 13th-century arcaded buildings, impressive palazzos and a 12th-century medieval castle in its center, and one of the most beautiful medieval bridges in Italy, the Ponte della Maddalena, across the river.
Marina Chiavari, located in the center of town is filled mostly with Italian yachts, although transient yachts are accepted if berths are available. Marina Lavagna is somewhat larger.
